SOLD: Three Benin or Togo Shields
Batammaliba culture, Republic of Benin or Togo, Africa
Early to Mid 20th C.
Wicker, natural fibers and leather
12.5 - 13 diameter, 5 - 6.5 deep in./ 32 -33 diameter, 12.5 - 15 deep cm
Custom wall mounts included, floating the shields 1.75 - 2 in./ 4.5 - 5 cm from the wall.
Also known as a parrying shield. This type of shield was used to deflect the strike of sticks or whips in ritual staged fights.
Beautifully made from hide and natural fibers with a textural and timeless modern form. The handle is attached with wicker stitching. Two of the shields have additional wicker stitching which are possibly native repairs or a method of adding strength to the shield. The points in the middle once had leather coverings. Some fiber losses.
