The weaving of silk required the fine, closely spaced dents in the two rectangular examples. The space between each dent would contain two threads to achieve cloth with well-distributed warps without lines.
The Baule example used cotton or natural fibers in a strip loom that produced narrow strips of cloth. Several lengths were sewn together along the selvage to create larger pieces of fabric.
