Every Dagara man who had undergone initiation was said to have possessed one of these stools. When approached by elders, he would beat on the ground with his stool as a sign of respect. These stools were carried over the left shoulder when traveling. The Daàká symbolized female ancestors on family shrines (Dewey, "Sleeping Beauties", Los Angeles, 1993: 91; Meyer 1981, p.121; Sieber 1980, p.87; Somé, "A propos de "fétiches lobi", Arts d'Afrique noire, 95, 1993:30).
