Hand crafted by William Roan, the blacksmith famous for making the original Bay Bridge Troll. About this piece, he writes “Double-crested Bay Bridge cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus). Many cultures consider cormorants a symbol of indulgence. Before the old Bay Bridge could be demolished, the resident Cormorants had to be relocated to the new Bridge. Artificial nests were constructed under the new Bridge to entice the mating flocks to the so-called Cormorant Hotels. Then Cormorant mannequins were placed next to the nests to suggest a desirable nesting location, but to no avail. It wasn’t until the noisy machines of destruction arrived at the Bridge that the Cormorants decided to find quieter quarters.”
